A Journey to the Year 2040

Together with CONCITO and Brain2Business, CORC hosted a journey to the year 2040 at this year's Danish Democracy Festival, "Folkemødet". The destination of the journey was a future Denmark where the climate goals have been reached and we are independent of fossil CO₂.

“…When the bell rings, you will find yourself in the year 2040, in a sustainable, resource light society within the planetary boundaries…” sounded the introduction to the Journey to the year 2040. Photo: Anna Munck Laybourn, Brain2Business.dk

Around 30 people gathered in the tent representing the BIOscene and sat with their eyes closed for around 25 minutes while travelling in their minds to the year 2040. The ‘experiment’ is based on the assumption that if scientific facts were sufficient, we would have restructured our society long ago.

"People need hope in order to act. To achieve a rapid and necessary transition, we must therefore be able to imagine new forms of everyday life and society," says Freja Friis, Climate Analyst at the Danish think tank CONCITO, who is the author behind the journey.

After the journey, the ‘travelers’ shared their experiences and which emotions it evoked. The experiences and sensations were visualized and collected on a common graphic.

The journey sparked some inspiring and constructive discussions about which society we want to create. Some of the phrases shared at the journey at ‘Folkemødet’ were:

“We are gardeners for the planet”

“Connectedness with the seasons and available resources”

“Freed up time”

“It’s awesome to contribute”

“Feeling at peace”

“Owning vs. sharing”

“Less noise and electronics feel nice!”

“Western vs. global life”

“The journey to the year 2040” took place in the BIOscene, which formed a framework for the potential of biotechnological solutions in the green transition within food, materials and much more.

BIOscenen was hosted by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, Danish Chamber of Commerce and Danish Confederation of Industry.
